Chelsea's Fernando Torres will miss Schalke Champions League match

Chelsea is talking on Schalke in Champions League play on Wednesday, but they’ll have to do so without Fernando Torres. He has been fighting off a thigh injury. On Saturday against Newcastle he was substituted off in the 62nd minute and aggravated the injury in training on Monday.

“Fernando we know is a muscular injury” Jose Mourinho said, via ESPN FC. “We don’t know the dimension, we have to wait.”

In Torres place, Chelsea will use either Samuel Eto’o or Demba Ba.

“Samuel and Demba, they want to play, they want to play,” Mourinho said. “They are waiting for opportunities to play so when they have that chance, and they know they are going to have it in this game and the next game against West Brom, they know they are going to have in their hands the job to play up front. I think it has to be, a good motivation for them and hopefully they can express on the pitch the way they work during the week.”

Chelsea hosts the game and the home field advantage could help them compensate for the loss of Torres, though Eto’o and Ba are serviceable replacements.
