Today, Entertainment Weekly has provided us with two new images from director Peter Jackson’s upcoming film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The new images show Orlando Bloom as he reprises his role as the elf Legolas from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Legolas looks as if he is ready for battle, except not with his trademark bow. This time, he has two blades drawn, one in each hand.
In the second image, we see Evangeline Lilly in her role as Tauriel. She is a Woodland Elf whose name means “Daughter of Mirkwood.” Tauriel is the head of the Mirkwood Elven Guard. Her character was not in the original book, or original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Director Peter Jackson and writer Fran Walsh, who just happens to be Jackson’s wife, created this character as an expansion of material adapted from the book.
When we last left our friends The Dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and the great wizard Gandalf, they had successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and Bilbo had found the “precious” One Ring.
In Desolation of Smaug, Thorin and the rest of the group will have to find their way to the Lonely Mountain where Bilbo will be tasked with seeking out the secret door that will grant them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2013.
