Kickboxing is coming to Madison Square Garden

Glory the international kickboxing promotion will be hosting their next event, Glory 12, at the Theater in Madison Square Garden, Nov. 23.

Kickboxing veteran Joe Schilling and is scheduled to take on 3-0 Wayne Barrett will fight in the main event. The co-main event will feature Ben Edwards taking on Jamal Ben Saddik.

The card will feature a four-man lightweight world championship tournament. In one semi-final match, Robin Van Roosmalen faces Davit Kiria. The winner of that match will fight the winner of the Giorgio Petrosyan vs. Andy ‘The Machine’ Riste bout in the finals of the tournament. The winner of the finals will not only be crowned the Glory Lightweight Tournament Champion, but also earn a cash prize of $150,000.

The Theater in Madison Square Garden will feature boxing cards on nights when the main arena is unavailable. It can seat up to 5,600 people.

This will be Glory’s sixth event in the United States. I hope it can develop a stronger following in 2014 as kickboxing and Muay Thai are good alternatives for MMA fans who prefer to watch fighters stand and trade leather versus watching them go to the canvas and try and work a submission. If Glory 12 is successful this could lead into a good 2014 for the kickboxing promotion.

Glory 12 is scheduled to air on Spike TV, Nov. 23, at 9 p.m./8 p.m, CST.
