Tarec Saffiedine ready to step into the octagon

For Strikeforce Welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine, it has been a long time coming.

Saffiedine, who had defeated Nate Marquardt to become the final Strikeforce Welterweight champion, had been one of the many Strikeforce fighters guaranteed to make his way to the octagon. He was scheduled to face Robbie Lawler in July until an injury forced him out of the fight.

Now Saffiedine will get his chance to step into the octagon as he faces Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger in the main event of UFC Fight Night 34, Jan. 4, 2014, in Marina Bay, Singapore. I think Ellenberger will be a good challenge for the “Sponge’s” first time in the octagon.

There is no doubt that Ellenberger has the advantage when it comes to striking as he has 15 knockouts to his credit. If the fight it will be close as both Saffiedine and Ellenberger have extensive grappling credentials.

I also think Ellenberger has the edge in terms of experience and fighting bigger named opponents. That said, anything can happen in MMA and Saffiedine could score another upset.

If Saffiedine wins this match, he will have beaten one of the top 170-pound fighters in the UFC and guarantee himself a match against one of the UFC’s top 3 welterweights.
