Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is getting close to a return after suffering a groin injury on Oct. 20, and he has was able to take the field with the team during yesterday’s practice. Of course, the Bears had a limited practice so Cutler didn’t have to do much, so there wasn’t a strong indication one way or another about whether he can return to the field this weekend.

However, the team is expecting an update on the Cutler front today, which will determine if he will start on Sunday or whether he will take another week off and let Josh McCown run the offense yet again.

“I don’t know where he’s at, really,” head coach Marc Trestman said, via the Chicago Tribune. “He has been running around, working out with the trainers. He spent a lot of time on the off day with Bobby [Slater, director of rehabilitation] working with bands and redirecting and things like that. It’ll be day to day, and we’ll see more tomorrow. We’re hopeful, but we’ve got to be reserved about it as well. We’ll see where things are in the morning when he’ll be evaluated.”

If Cutler gets the go ahead, it will be interesting to see if the Bears throw him immediately back in to the starting line up.

McCown has done an admirable job leading the offense, so giving him one more week in a key divisional game could be the wise choice over throwing a guy back out there in his return from an injury.

We will learn more on Cutler’s status today, so stay tuned.
