When video games are challenging and force gamers to make difficult decisions this could be interpreted as a good or bad thing.
There have not been too many games recently that would be considered hard or where the player would need a strategy guide to finish the game.
The people at From Software took this idea to a different level when they released the action role-playing game Dark Souls about two years ago.
It was received well by critics and known mainly for the challenge it presented to players.
There was no setting to ease the burden on players and death in the game had strict penalties that reinforced players to make careful decisions.
So when the developer announced they were working on a sequel, it’s hard to know what can be expected from it.
The story of Dark Souls 2 will revolve around a cursed character trying to find a cure for their agony.
Another part of the story is that it will be emotional and involved similar to the story of Demon’s Souls.
The director for the game mentioned that the concept of time will be factored into the story, and “if the first game was set in the North Pole, this one would be in the South Pole.
The gameplay mechanics will remain the same from the first game.
The game world is going to be about twice the size of Dark Souls with the beginning of the game being made more accessible to newcomers.
There will not be an Easy Mode because the game is being created with the thought that challenge and difficulty are core elements for the game.
The game will also feature a more advanced AI system that allows enemies to react to a wider range of actions by the player.
Dark Souls 2 is expected to release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC March 2014.
Here’s a trailer that highlights some gameplay.
Let me know your thoughts about the game and what your experience was with the first game.
