I understand most players in this league look to free agency in hopes of receiving a long term contract with a huge salary, but do most players actually deserve what they ask for?

I’m not saying Ervin Santana is a terrible pitcher, but I’m scratching my head over his request to receive more than $100 million over a five year contract.

The man had his best season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim back in 2008 where he struck out 214 batters, had a 16-7 record and posted a 3.49 ERA. Since then, he’s hit 107, 169, 178, 133, 161 strike outs while averaging a 4.19 ERA a season.

Now a lot of teams are stacked with cash and could be willing to pay Santana the money he needs, but most teams will more than likely shy away from that number and try to spend that money elsewhere. After being traded by the Angels, Santana made $13 million this season which was mostly covered by the Angels.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s one of the top free agent pitchers on the market, but it will be a surprise if he gets anything close to $100 million.

He finished the 2013 season with a record of 9-10, 161 strike outs, 1.14 WHIP and a 3.24 ERA through 32 starts.

Now a question for the readers who stumble upon this article. If you’re a general manager, would you be willing to pay Santana the money he wants in order to get him in your rotation? Or try your luck elsewhere?
