When the UCLA administration hired Steve Alford to lead their heralded basketball program this past offseason, it was met with mixed emotions.
Due to Alford’s sketchy past, not many really warmed up to the idea of putting him in such a prominent national position, regardless of prior coaching experience. Some thought that he deserved a fair shake in Westwood.
Nonetheless, Alford is the man in charge of the Bruins’ basketball program whether anyone likes it or not.
On Friday night, the maligned coach made his debut at home in the legendary Pauley Pavilion as he and his team are taking on the Drexel Dragons to begin the 2013-2014 campaign.
I wish I could say that many excited Bruins basketball fans appeared inside Pauley to help welcome in the Steve Alford era, but–well, they didn’t:

You can interpret this however you want, but that’s not a good sign for a place that prides itself on the accomplishments of this particular sport.
