Barcelona striker Lionel Messi suffered a torn hamstring in Sunday’s game against Real Betis. That injury has him out for 8 weeks, and missing two months means that his Ballon d’Or streak is in jeopardy.
Messi has won the award given to the World Player of the Year four years in a row. Messi could’ve already been in jeopardy of losing the award, before the injury, to Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo who has been on fire to start the season. Messi has been playing through injuries this season while Ronaldo has been dominating opponents.
Through 13 La Liga games, Ronaldo has 16 goals, that is double Messi’s 8 goals. In UEFA Champions League play, Ronaldo has 8 goals through 4 games. That gives him 24 goals through 17 games this season. Messi has 6 goals through 4 Champions League games.
With two months to stake a claim to the trophy with Messi on the side line, it looks like it could be Ronaldo’s.
It is important to note that it is awarded based on a calendar year, and that includes parts of two seasons. The award ceremony is on Monday, January 13th in 2014. There are a lot of quality players on the rest, so there could be a surprise winner as well.
