On Sunday, Barcelona and Lionel Messi took on Real Betis. At the 21 minute mark, Messi told the dugout he needed to be subbed out. Messi had hurt his hamstring hamstring, though tests on Monday revealed it was a torn hamstring. Lionel Messi has been fighting through injuries all season long, and his teammate Cesc Fabregas wants him to rest and heal fully.
“[Messi] has to stop to take the time that he needs to emphasise his explosiveness,” Fabregas said, via the Independent. “Something similar happened to me and I was badly affected.
“You believe you’re okay at first but you’re not. I was disappointed to miss out on some games but I know I’m at Barcelona and I will continue to grow.
“I spent the injury out of action and even spent half a year with the ordeal, which was not good; it was a very bad injury. Messi has to stop as it takes time to recover if it does not heal properly.”
Barcelona sit atop the table in La Liga at the moment and they also atop their group in UEFA Champions League tournament with a 5-point lead with two games left.
They have the talent to ride out stretch in La Liga and keep churning out wins. In Champions League, the knock out phase doesn’t start till February and they’ve basically already locked in one of the top two spots in their group. They still play Ajax Amsterdam and Celtic in group play, and a draw would guarantee a spot in the knock out round.
