The injury bug has struck the UFC on FOX 9 card once again. Earlier this week it was announced that the main event between Lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, and contender, Josh Thomson, would be postponed due to an injury to Pettis.
Luckily, the UFC found a great replacement main event when they moved the Flyweight title rematch between Joe Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson from the TUF finale to the Fox show.
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum, or former WEC Lightweight champion Jamie Varner, on the card either. Both men suffered injuries that will require them to have a lengthy lay off.
Both Gastelum and Varner confirmed their injuries on twitter:
So I guess news is out. I tore my PCL and will need about 4-6 weeks recovery. Good news is I won’t need surgery. I’m really bummed tho

I guess the word got out so I thought I’d let everyone know last weds sparring I tore my rotator cuff and will be out a few weeks! Sorry ;(

With both men injured the card takes a significant hit. Gastelum, a fast rising star in the UFC, was set to face off against fellow TUF winner, Court McGee. Varner was set to tangle with Pat Healy in what many hoped would be fight of the night.
Hopefully both men can heal up and get back in the Octagon soon. Let’s hope this is the end of injury news for this card.
