The Philadelphia Phillies have been more than open in regards to keeping Carlos Ruiz on their roster. But the Phillies catcher is drawing heavy interest in the free agent market and could venture to greener pastures. If that does happen, the Phillies reportedly will shift their interest to catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who spent the 2013 season with the Texas Rangers:
#Phillies making A.J. Pierzynski No. 1 catching option if can’t reach deal w Carlos Ruiz.
Pierzynski, who turns 37-years-old later this month has still been getting the job done offensively as he hit .272 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI with the Rangers last season. Still, you wonder when all the innings caught will catch up with the veteran backstop and his offensive numbers will begin to stagnate.
There’s no mention of what type of deal the Phillies would be offering Pierzynski, though, it should be noted their main target is still bringing back their current free agent catcher, Carlos Ruiz as mentioned above.
