As you can imagine, the film that is heating up the headlines right now is the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film, the follow up to Man of Steel, being directed by Zack Snyder. However, I think director Guillermo del Toro may have just dropped a knowledge pipe bomb on fans of the DC Universe.
What you may or may not know is that del Toro is working on a project for the DC Universe as well. He is currently working on the Justice League Dark film which is currently operating under the working title of Dark Universe.
The film will focus on the supernatural-inspired team of Swamp Thing, Deadman, The Spectre, The Demon, John Constantine, and the father/daughter team of Zatara and Zatanna.
Del Toro was recently interviewed by Cinefilos TV at the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma, or for those of us who don’t speak Italian, the International Film Festival of Rome.
When asked about his upcoming project, being Justice League Dark, he said that there were no new details to report, and that they are still in the very early stages of production. However, he went one step further.
“We’re still on it (Justice League Dark), writing, and hopefully it will happen, but there are no developments that are new. We’re still at Warner Bros., they are making plans for the entire DC universe. All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They’re planning on TV, movies, all the media, so we have to fit within that plan.”
Wait…did he say the entire DC Universe?
After a little more digging, I have found that there are indeed a few things in the hopper over at Warner Bros. when it comes to the DC Universe.
First up, obviously, is the aforementioned Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman currently being filmed in Detroit.
After that comes The Flash. There are a number of people who are working on the script for that right now, although there is nothing to report as far as casting, directors, or any specifics like that. They are currently eyeing a 2016 release on that film.
This would bring us to the culmination of these projects with the Justice League film. Right now, David S. Goyer, who also worked on Man of Steel, is writing the script for Justice League.
Again, this is quite a distance down the road, so there are not a lot of details available on the project. As of this moment, this film is not slated until 2017.
So, as we can see, there is indeed a timeline evolving for new projects entering the DC Universe. It will be interesting to see which films they plan to bring to light prior to the coming together of the teams in Justice League and where exactly Dark Universe plays into all of this.
