Detroit Red Wings roster moves: Jordin Tootoo sent to AHL, Patrick Eaves waived

With Jonathan Ericsson set to come back from a dislocated shoulder, the Detroit Red Wings were forced to make a few roster  moves to clear up cap space. Jordin Tootoo was finally demoted to the AHL after clearing rafters last week, while forward Patrick Eaves was placed on waivers at noon today, according to Ansar Khan of MLive.

Eaves carries a $1.2 million cap hit, and if he’s claimed by another squad then that comes off the books entirely. If the forward clears waivers and ends up in Grand Rapids along with Tootoo, the Wings will save $925,000.

All of this to clear the way for Ericsson, who will play for Detroit when they take on the Washington Capitals on Friday night.

Detroit’s defense has been banged up and bruised all season long, with the likes of Xavier Ouellet being forced into some important minutes for the Wings. Usually one of the more sound defensive groups in the NHL, Detroit has seen a wave of youngsters this season and that has made them susceptible to miscues and bad plays.

Ericsson is an important player for this team, and they’re better with him in the lineup due to how shaky the young D has been at times.

The Wings will attempt to break a four-game losing streak against the Capitals on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. Washington just snapped a two-game losing streak against the Columbus Blues Jackets on Tuesday.
