Frederik Andersen to AHL, Viktor Fasth returns to Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks logjam in net is in full swing now that Viktor Fasth is healthy enough to play again. Today the Ducks recalled him from his long-term conditioning stint in the AHL and demoted Frederik Andersen. That’s a tough draw for Andersen, who’s been receiving some backing for the Calder Trophy with his outstanding play as a rookie this season.

Of course, that was the storyline for Fasth last season: an out-of-nowhere sensation taking the NHL by storm on a nightly basis. Anaheim now has more goalies than they know what to do with.

There are several teams around the NHL that would love to have three NHL-caliber netminders to lug around. The Carolina Hurricanes come to mind, as they’ve struggled with both Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin on the shelf. Put the Nashville Predators on the list of squads that would like to have a netminder of Andersen’s apparent caliber in the minors to call on as well.

What the Ducks do with this trio is anyone’s guess. The market for a netminder hasn’t been particularly strong to this point, so Anaheim probably hasn’t had anyone come along to blow their socks off yet. Someone will be an odd-man out at some juncture. Whether it’s Fasth, Andersen or Jonas Hiller remains to be seen.
