Maybe Ilya Bryzgalov is just trying to get all of his “bad” out of his system before he makes the trek to Edmonton to suit up for the Oilers. He made his highly anticipated AHL debut for the Oklahoma City Barons tonight, and things didn’t go swimmingly for Edmonton’s hail-marry pass of a goaltender.
Bryzgalov game up five goals on 24 shots and ate a 5-4 loss.
Ilya Bryzgalov allows 5 goals in debut for OKC on 24 shots in 5-4 loss. CGY farmhand Ben Street with the hat trick.

It’s important to note that this is his first professional game in quite some time, but seriously? Five goals in the minors? Bryzgalov is supposed to be in the NHL stopping the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Corey Perry within a week or so, but he can’t get a glove on Ben Street’s writer?
This may or may not signal early trouble for the netminder. If this was anyone besides Bryzgalov it probably wouldn’t be noteworthy, but this is one of the more eccentric personalities we’ve seen in the NHL in quite some time. He couldn’t stand the heat of being a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, and for whatever reason the Oilers thought that he could take the blazing furnace that is Edmonton.
With another performance or two like this in the AHL, we may find out what Bryzgalov is really made of sooner rather than later.
