Milan Lucic is the kind of player that can make you pay for a mistake. Cam Atkinson and the Columbus Blue Jackets found that out the hard way as the bruising winger buried the Jackets in overtime following a bad play in the offensive zone by Atkinson. That’s all it takes for this opportunistic Boston Bruins team though, and Columbus paid the price by taking a loss.
That’s a play that will drive a coach absolutely nuts. Defensemen absolutely can not have their shots blocked from the blue line like that, and the circumstance doesn’t change the error. Atkinson is a forward, but he still knows better than to rip a shot off of a forward six feet inside of the offensive zone.
Lucic isn’t going to make a mistake with that sort of opportunity either, and it’s pretty impressive that he managed to out-skate the smaller, quicker Atkinson by such a wide margin.
Boston has now won four of its last five games and is on a five-game point streak. They’re 12-5-1 following their recent five-game home stand, and are sitting in second in the Atlantic Division behind the 14-5 Tampa Bay Lightning, who blew out the Anaheim Ducks by a 5-1 final last night.
The Bruins will be back in action today against the Ottawa Senators.
