Amongst all the friendlies being played today, there were some World Cup qualifying matches. The biggest one of the day was clearly the match between Portugal and Sweden.
In the 15th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled and awarded a free kick about 25 yards out from the right post. He kicked it low and into the wall and it bounced back at him. Sweden got their own free kick minutes later but they sent it wide. Ultimately the half ended with both teams getting six shots, Portugal with one on goal, and Sweden with two on goal. Portugal owned the possession with 67 percent.
The game dragged on with the teams getting a chance here or there but it looked like this one was headed towards a draw. That would’ve been a win for the Swedish team to leave Portugal with a 0-0 draw. But on big stages big players step up and this game had one on each side.
In the 82nd minute, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo answered the call. On a cross into the middle of the box, Ronaldo dove to head in a goal. He must have connected with the ball 2-3 feet of the ground. That gave Portugal a late game spark.
About three minutes later, Ronaldo jumped high into the air to head another ball on goal. This one beat the keeper but hit the cross-bar and bounced back into play. Ronaldo got another chance at the top of the box at in the 89th minute but sent it high and wide.
Portugal takes a 1-0 lead to Sweden for the second leg.
