Freshman walk-on Eric Kristensen will start at kicker for Virginia Tech when the Hokies take on the Maryland Terrapins this weekend. Kristensen will replace senior Cody Journell, who was dismissed from the team earlier this week.

Defensive coordinator Bud Foster joked with reporters about Kristensen’s anonymity:

I don’t know who the dude was out there. I really don’t know. I think we must have picked him up at an aisle at Walmart or something, or Kroger. I don’t even know his name. I’m sorry. … I’m pulling for the guy. He kicked the ball good [Wednesday] (The Virginian-Pilot).

Kristensen, who isn’t even listed in the game’s official program, said he’s excited to go out and demonstrate his talents:

They invited me back and I figured I would either handle kickoffs or redshirt. Mitchell Ludwig did such a great job on kickoffs that I thought I’d sit out this year, but now things have changed and I’m ready to roll.

We wish Kristensen the best of luck in his first collegiate start.
