Bellator released welterweight champion Ben Askren, who may have been octagon-bound, had UFC President Dana White announced the promotion was not interested in the “Funky” one at this time.
But the UFC and Bellator’s loss may be the gain of the World Series of Fighting.
According to a report on MMAFighting.com, Ali Abdel-Azziz, WSOF executive vice president and matchmaker, said the promotion has already extended an offer to Askren’s management team.
Askren has yet to accept the offer at this time. If he did decide to go to WSOF, he would be their biggest signee in the welterweight division since Jon Fitch. WSOF could give the former Bellator champion a couple of tune-up fights or they could have him face Fitch.
While a match between Fitch and Askren may not be a match that would excite the fans, it would determine who the next contender for WSOF Welterweight champion Steve Carl.
If Askren defeated Fitch, in an impressive fashion, it may be the thing that grabs the UFC’s attention.
White said that Askren would need to fight in a different promotion and his way up. A win over Fitch would be the start of working his way up toward fighting in the octagon.
