The co-main event of UFC 167 is a Light-Heavyweight battle between friends and co-workers, Chael Sonnen and Rashad Evans. Both Chael and Rashad have been very respectful of each other’s skill leading up to this fight. Chael even stated before the fight that he is unsure of how to beat Rashad. It will be interesting to see if all of Chael’s distractions and responsibilities will affect his performance tonight. Chael is coming off a fantastic first round submission over former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Shogun Rua. Rashad most recently defeated Dan Henderson at UFC 161 after losing two in a row.
Round 1: Chael immediately takes the center of the Octagon. Quick jab by Chael. Double leg shot by Chael, but Rashad stuffs it. Chael has Rashad wrapped up on the fence, but gets turned by Rashad. Sonnen turns Rashad now, and back again. Chael gets the clinch and lands some knees to the body. Rashad drops down for a takedown, but can’t get it. Chael tries to land a knee high. Body punches from Rashad. Big right from Rashad on the exit and pushes Chael back up again. Rashad drops down for a double and gets it. Half guard for Sonnen. Rashad is not throwing very many strikes. Now he is throwing some rights. Rashad is pushing Chael’s face down with his forearm. Rashad with a big elbow that hurts Chael. Rashad is landing some big shots as Chael turns over. Rashad is landing some heavy shots and Chael is flattened out. More and more punches from Rashad, and Herb Dean stops the fight. Fantastic performance for Rashad Evans.
