Undefeated Russian fighter Vitaly Minakov captured the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career when he knocked out Alexander Volkov to become the Bellator Heavyweight champion.
Although Minakov is now the champion, he now has the difficult task of defending his title. Unlike most champions, Minakov knows the identity of his next challenger: Cheick Kongo, who earned the right to fight for the heavyweight title after he defeated Peter Graham to win the Bellator Season Nine Heavyweight Tournament, at Bellator 107, Nov. 8.
A scrap between Kongo and Minakov should be exciting for the fans, especially if it stays on the feet. Both fighters have the capability to knockout their opponents. Kongo may have the edge when it comes to experience, having fought notable names like Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione.
Where Minakov may lack in experience, he makes up for it in grappling, as well as the momentum of being an undefeated world champion.
The match between Minakov and Kongo will most likely take place in 2014 as Bellator’s Season Finale is scheduled for Nov. 22.
