While Ted Wells conducts his investigation of Miami offensive tackle Jonathan Martin’s allegations of harassment, it won’t just be players in the Dolphins’ locker room that will face scrutiny.
Besides the alleged “Code Red” order from coaches to Richie Incognito to “toughen” Martin up, there is the possibility that the coaches themselves were directly involved in the harassment, specifically Miami offensive line coach Jim Turner.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Turner will be investigated for possible involvement in the alleged harassment against Martin.
Mortensen has pointed out that Turner often uses “loud, insulting, and profane language” when talking with players. While this is certainly conduct shared with many coaches, the question becomes if Turner specifically targeted Martin or focussed more of his attention on him.
During the 2012 season of the show Hard Knocks, Turner was complimentary of Martin, saying that the young tackle was quiet and that is a good thing. But that was in front of rolling cameras.
If Turner is found to be involved, it will be hard to believe that Joe Philbin and rest of the coaching staff did not know of what was going on. And if they did, it will probably be the end of the Philbin-era in Miami.
