Monday afternoon, the semifinalists for the 2013 John Mackey Award, recognizing the nation’s best tight end for a given season, were announced.

With the growing trend of spread offenses and throwing the ball taking over the sport of college football, the tight end’s role in the offense is becoming more and more prominent. Once thought of as just linemen with good hands, the tight end slot is now filled with athletes who have more wide receiver tendencies than in the past.

They’re big, they’re strong, they’re athletic. Most of them, with their combination of size and speed, can be considered the very definition of athletic freaks.

Let’s have a look at the eight semifinalists who all will have a chance to take the coveted award home when it’s given away at this year’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show:
