Word of warning, interested MLB teams. If you want to sign second baseman Robinson Cano to a contract, you’ll need to go through Jay Z who according to the New York Daily News will be ‘intimately involved’ in Cano’s free agency.
But the rapper/repper is “intimately involved in all areas” of the process, according to the man who is leading the negotiations for Cano’s side, CAA’s Brodie Van Wagenen.
“That has been true for the last six months and it’s certainly true now,” Van Wagenen said Sunday in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Sirius/XM. “Jay is a very, very successful businessman who has a keen understanding of value, a keen understanding of brands and a keen understanding of what this player, Robinson Cano, wants to accomplish for his career.
Cano has essentially become the marquee star of Jay’s ‘Roc Nation Sports’ and there’s no doubt all involved want to make quite a splash whenever Cano does sign.
That might be a while though as it was reported this past weekend that Cano is ‘fine’ with the process taking a while and that he’s in no rush to sign.
Few teams can afford the type of deal Cano is seeking. Even less are interested in providing such a contract, so the bidding process should realistically only involve a very select number of teams.
