You won’t be seeing Buster Posey at first base, at least, not for an extending period of time – this according to San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean.

The Giants’ GM was quizzed recently about Posey’s position at the General Managers Meetings in Orlando and made no qualms, Posey is a catcher and will be remaining at the position for the foreseeable future.

“When we signed him to an extension, we considered him as a catcher, and those numbers he was able to get in the extension were based on him being a catcher,” said Sabean, referring to the nine-year, $167 million deal Posey and the Giants reached last March. For Posey, Sabean added, catching “is his passion, and that’s where we need him to be at long term.”

Posey of course missed nearly the entire 2011 season after he was injured in a home plate collision and with the Minnesota Twins recently moving Joe Mauer to first base, the topic of moving offensive backstops to another position is at an all-time high.
