As the host nation, Brazil has already qualified for the 2014 World Cup. Chile has also qualified by finishing in third place in the CONMEBOL Round Robin qualifying. The two teams are playing a friendly in Canada to get a little practice ahead of the tournament, but Brazil is already oozing with confidence.
“Brazil will be champions,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, via ESPN FC. “If I didn’t believe we could win the World Cup, I would not coach the team. I would be sitting at home.”
It isn’t just their manager who is feeling confident.
“Our biggest goal is to be champions. We are working hard in each game to get the World Cup in good shape,” midfielder Paulinho said. “Friendly matches are like finals to us because it is a big warm-up to the World Cup.”
A few days ago, Brazil dismantled a Honduras team that is qualified for the World Cup. Chile knows Brazil better and could be a tougher test.
“The 5-0 score (against Honduras) did not reflect reality,” Scolari said. “It was a well-contested game and it could have been 2-0 or 3-0. Chile have great quality. They drew with Spain and then defeated England and all of them are high-level players.”
