MLB rumors: Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles in talks with Carlos Beltran

Can you say American League East bidding war?

Free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran has been drawing heavy interest around the league as one of the top free agents available, though many have suggested that Beltran will be forced to select an American League team as his days roaming the outfield are limited.

Three of those interested teams are reportedly the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, this according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:

Red Sox still engaged in Carlos Beltran talks along with Yankees and Orioles. Which team must apt to give 3 yrs could land him.

While National League teams have showed interest in Beltran, they simply can’t compete with the financial offers as American League teams will best them with an additional year or two where Beltran can serve as a designated hitter.

The St. Louis Cardinals did extend a qualifying offer to Beltran, meaning they’ll receive a compensatory draft pick whenever Beltran does sign, though that shouldn’t drive down his market much as the interested teams don’t appear to be overly concerned about losing a draft pick to sign the aging Beltran.
