Running phenom Sarah Baxter has announced that she’s made a verbal commitment to run at the University of Oregon next year. Baxter has won three California state championships in her illustrious prep career, and she was named the 2012 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Baxter told the Los Angeles Daily News that while her decision was tough — she was also considering Colorado and Washington, both of which have great cross country programs — she felt she made the right choice in the end:
It was really hard because I’ve grown really close to these people. It was a difficult decision to make. It was hard to tell (other schools) no.
It’s just a feeling I got. I could see myself going there for the next four years. Just being around the team, you could tell they could all relate to each other. It’s a great school to go to and a great team dynamic. It’s a lot like what I’ve had here at Simi Valley.
Baxter’s verbal commitment is a big win for the Ducks. Fellow prep star Mary Cain was also considering running for the University of Oregon, but she elected to turn professional instead.
