Cristiano Ronaldo not worried about Ballon d'Or, worried about World Cup

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo was incredibly impressive during their World Cup playoff games against Sweden. They won 4-2 aggregate and Ronaldo had all four goals. That included a 3 goal performance in the second game on Tuesday.

FIFA has extended the Ballon d’Or voting, which many say was to allow more voters to choose Ronaldo and account for his performance against Sweden. It could be an attempt by FIFA president Sepp Blatter to make amends with Ronaldo after he was caught on video mocking Ronaldo.

“Every year I have shown what I am,” Ronaldo told Portuguese TV. “I have scored 40 or 50 goals a season and that is not within the reach of everyone. I am not blinded by this [prize].”

“I did my work as I have been doing all this time,” Ronaldo said. “I do not have to respond to anyone. My answers I make on the pitch. I try always to give my best.”

There has been some backlash over the decision to extend voting. Ronaldo was never focused on that trophy, just getting his country to the World Cup.

“We battled and we suffered, but that is normal between two great teams,” Ronaldo said. “We let Sweden believe a little after they equalised, we sat back and we suffered the second goal. That is part of football, you never know who will win until the end. We were the better team in both games. We deserved to win.”
