The New York Rangers are reportedly reeving interest in restricted free-agent-to-be Michael Del Zotto. Among the teams that could be interested is the Ottawa Senators. Brian Stubits of CBSSports.com put a few pieces of the trade rumor puzzle together, and a move could be made between the Blueshirts and Sens at some juncture.
Nothing is imminent, but Ottawa hasn’t been shy about their desire to add a puck-moving defenseman to take some of the heat off of Erik Karlsson. During a recent Insider Trading segment, Darren Dreger spoke about how badly Del Zotto has struggled to this point, and mentioned that “five or six teams have inquired” about the young defenseman.
Given that the Sens need a guy that can get the puck up the ice and that the Rangers are looking for some help up front, could there be a match? It’s speculation right now, but the needs certainly seem to matchup. New York apparently showed some interest in Martin Havlat, but could possibly secure the forward depth they’re looking for by moving Del Zotto to Ottawa.

With teams starting to settle into their current grooves and management getting a clearer picture of what is needed for the rest of the year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some of these trades begin to come to a head sometimes in the near future. Again, nothing on Del Zotto’s front is imminent, but there appears to be some smoke with this situation.
