Johnny Manziel to decide on NFL draft before bowl

Nov 9, 2013; College Station, TX, USA; Texas A

There has been a lot of speculation over whether Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will return in 2014 or leave for the NFL Draft. Kevin Sumlin said on ESPN Radio’s “SVP & Russillo” that he hasn’t talked to Manziel about the decision yet, but he said to expect an announcement before the bowl game.

“We haven’t had that conversation,” Sumlin said. “My job is to get him all the facts that we can get him. We’ll have that discussion after the Missouri game, certainly during the bowl preparation. I’m sure the announcement will be made at that time.

Manziel was thrust into the spot light after leading A&M to a Heisman Trophy and a Cotton Bowl victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. The summer saw that honeymoon come to an end while off field issues took the spotlight.

“He’s handled things on the field as well as any player in the country,” Sumlin said. “His numbers are better than they were last year. And I’ve had a number of people tell me there’s no more exciting college football player in the country than he is, and he’s the guy they like to watch. He’s a special talent. His energy, his leadership on the team is evident and he continues to get better every week.”

Johnny Manziel does not have much to gain with another year of college ball, whether he wins another Heisman or not. He will also consider the risk of another year at A&M regarding injury, as he had a knee and shoulder problem this year. In the end, the multimillion dollar contract that awaits him in the NFL will be the decisive factor.
