The controversy surrounding UFC 167 has many layers. Seemingly, everyone and their mother has an opinion on the fight, GSP’s ‘retirement’, and GSP’s personal issues. Most fighters on twitter were focused on the fight at hand, and believed Johny Hendricks was robbed of the belt. Some said it would be wrong for Georges St-Pierre to step away and not give Hendricks a rematch. Dana White said that GSP ‘owes’ Hendricks and the fans a rematch. Others believed that GSP should retire and give himself some time to sort out personal issues.
On Fox Sports Live, UFC fighters Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Phil Davis, and Kenny Florian gave their thoughts on the GSP retirement issue and more.
Michael Bisping seemingly shares the same sentiment as Dana White, when asked if GSP should retire:
If you are the world champion, and you are coming off a razor close, controversial decision, you have to give [Hendricks] the rematch, and you have to defend the belt. You either walk away from the title, relinquish the belt or you carry on fighting.
GSP’s post fight comments were far from definitive. When he says he wants to leave the sport for a while, does that mean he is taking the belt with him? Will he be relinquishing the belt?
Clearly fighters want a definitive choice from GSP; either retire or fight but, do not leave the Welterweight division in a state of limbo with interim champions.
