Josh Smith misses practice for ill father, is benched by Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons made some waves on Friday night when they benched star forward Josh Smith, though the reasoning behind it has left some eyebrows raised.

Smith, who is an Atlanta native and former member of the Hawks returned to his former stomping grounds on Wednesday though reportedly missed Thursday’s practice to stay home with his sick father in Atlanta.

The versatile forward said he learned of Thursday’s practice in the wee hours of the morning and didn’t communicate well enough with the team to inform them he wouldn’t be attending, resulting in the benching Friday evening:

Smith apologizes for missing Thursday practice. Stayed home to be with his ill father. #pistons

Smith’s father didn’t attend Wednesday’s game at Atlanta because of illness and Smith said it affected him. #pistons

Head coach Maurice Cheeks said that there will be no issues going forward and that Smith is his starting forward, but I can’t imagine Smith was overly thrilled given the situation.

The Pistons forward, who played 19 minutes in the benching, went 0-7 en route to scoring zero points.

    1. It is the responsibility of each player to show up to practice on time.
    2. Smith did not make it to practice and did not communicate sufficiently regarding his absence.
    3. Cheeks responded by starting Singler.

Smith’s opinion regarding this is irrelevant, as are his reason(s) for missing practice.
