No. 23 USC beats Colorado 47-29

No. 23 USC beat Colorado 47-29 at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO.  USC improved to 9-3 (6-2 Pac-12), and Colorado fell to 4-7 (1-7 Pac-12).

Both teams got off to slow starts in the first quarter.  At 5:34, USC scored first on a Javorius “Buck” Allen 12-yard touchdown run.  At 1:04, the Trojans scored a safety, and the first quarter ended with USC up 9-0.

The second quarter was all USC as well.  Colorado QB Sefo Liufau had a rough second quarter including a fumble deep in his own territory, and an interception by Trojan safety Dion Bailey.  Both turnovers led to USC touchdowns.  At halftime, the Trojans led 23-0, and were in complete control of the game.

Colorado scored quickly to begin the third quarter off a fumble recovery by defensive back Jered Bell.  The rest of the third belonged to USC after two more touchdowns including Buck Allen’s third TD run.  At 7:19 in the third, the score was 37-7, and the Trojans seemed to be cruising to a victory.

Colorado fought back in the fourth scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion.  USC hit a field goal, but with 3:19 left in the game, USC led 40-29 with the momentum in Colorado’s favor.  At 3:19, Colorado attempted an onside kick, but the Trojans recovered the ball on the Colorado 49.  At 2:19, the Trojans scored on a 52-yard TD run by Soma Vainuku.  Vainuku’s rushing TD put the Trojans ahead 47-29, and closed out Colorado’s comeback bid.

Top performers: USC RB Buck Allen, 21 carries for 145 yards and 3 TDs; USC QB Cody Kessler, 19 for 28, 184 yards, 2 TDs; Colorado QB Sefo Liufau, 17 for 33, 188 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT; Colorado WR Paul Richardson, 8 receptions, 1 TD.

Next week, USC will play No. 14 UCLA at home, and Colorado will travel to Utah.
