The Carolina Hurricanes weren’t the same team when Cam Ward was injured earlier in the season, and saves like the one he made last night on Collin Greening of the Ottawa Senators illustrate why. With the ‘Canes trailing by one early in the first period, the goaltender made a rather routine looking save on Derek Grant, who had just taken a wobbly pass from Erik Karlsson.
The routine save turned into a nasty rebound as Ward kicked the puck out to a streaking Greening, who was driving to the net and looking for some loose change.
Here’s the result.
It’s funny to think that if Greening had managed to score here that it would have been considered a dirty goal. Ward somehow managed to get his stick out and across the crease, and got enough of the puck to keep it out of the net and the result is a beautiful save. Just a spectacular desperation play by Ward, who recovered from his sloppy rebound with this stunning stop.
Aside from the highlight reel save, the netminder was superb in his second game in as many nights. After losing to the Boston Bruins on Saturday, Ward stopped 35 of the 36 shots on goal that the Ottawa Senators could come up with last night. If there was any doubt about how important the 29-year-old goalie is to this team, there shouldn’t be now.
