Barcelona has a solid five point lead and have already clinched a spot in the next round. A win over Ajax Amsterdam would guarantee them the top spot in the group. Ajax is still in the hunt for the second spot sitting in third place just one point behind AC Milan. They’ll be looking to take advantage of a weakened and depleted Barcelona squad.
“I always considered Ajax a great team who know what they need to do on the pitch,” Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. “They are technically skilled and they know how to play. I know that we are going to face a difficult opponent. Ajax like to have the ball, they play quickly, so it won’t be easy to get the ball off them. They aren’t afraid to take risks, so we have to put pressure, get the ball and maintain ball possession.
“When I walk through the corridors [at Barcelona] I see the photos of the people responsible for the style of Barcelona. Many Dutch players and Ajax too have certainly been very important for this style. [Today] we want to play beautiful football, we’re committed to that. We don’t want just to win; we will continue working to win every match with beautiful football.
“In my eyes we’re missing the best player in the world so that’s always a bit difficult, but we have other players who can play and maintain the quality of our team. So if we don’t win tomorrow it’s not because [Lionel] Messi isn’t playing.”
