Whovians around the world just finished celebrating one of the biggest occasions in all of Doctor Who history, the 50th Anniversary of the longtime series, commemorated with a special entitled ‘The Day of the Doctor’.
Now that the celebration has concluded, Whovians must brace themselves for the moment in time they fear the most; when they must say goodbye to the current Doctor as he regenerates and becomes someone completely new right in front of their eyes.
During this year’s Christmas special, that time will arrive once again. We will be forced to bid farewell to our beloved 11th Doctor. Well…maybe he’s the 13th Doctor after ‘The Day of the Doctor’, but who really knows? All this wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff can be so confusing sometimes.
In any case, we will be saying goodbye to Matt Smith as the Doctor regenerates, making way for the 12th, possibly 14th, Doctor to emerge. As most of you know, Scottish actor Peter Capaldi will be taking up the sonic screwdriver of the Doctor from then on; or at least until show runner Steven Moffat decides to play with our emotions some more.
The official title of the Christmas Special is ‘The Time of the Doctor’.
Here is the mysterious synopsis of the episode straight from the BBC.
Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars – and amongst them, the Doctor.
Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.”
From the image released, it looks as if we will not only see the return of the Silence, but also those pesky Cybermen. Will those deadly robots ever give up on taking over the world?
