Diesel, the adorable husky pictured above, will be on the Northern Illinois sideline for the final time on Tuesday night when NIU takes on Western Michigan. Diesel, who has served as the team’s mascot for nine years, will be honored during the evening’s Senior Day festivities and will retire after the game.

(Must…repress…urge…to…go…AWWWWWWWW.)

NIU athletic director Sean Frazier released the following statement about the beloved canine:

In many ways, Diesel has become the face of Huskie football over the past nine years. He’s been the constant figure on the sidelines representing NIU, whether home or away, at bowl games, spring games and more. He’s a fan favorite, the TV cameras love him and he’s a great dog. On behalf of Huskie Nation, I want to thank Tom and Diesel for everything they have done to represent Northern Illinois University (CBS Sports).

During the first quarter of the game, Mission, the new NIU husky, will be introduced. He’ll certainly have some big paw prints to fill.
