We are now under one month away from the release of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Over the course of the last few months, the promotional machine has been kicking into high gear. We have seen Will Ferrell’s signature character on Burgundy in just about everything from television promos to commercials for other brands; however, we have yet to see something quite as epic as this. On December 5th, Ron Burgundy will be your host of ESPN’s SportsCenter.
Yes, according to The Wrap, Will Ferrell will head to ESPN’s studios to host the 6:00 p.m. SportsCenter on Thursday, December 5th as our favorite self-centered broadcaster, Ron Burgundy.
What makes this that much funnier is that this is not the first time we have seen Ron Burgundy in the set of SportsCenter. One of the bonus features on Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a video where we see a young Ron Burgundy as he goes to ESPN studios for an audition to be the host of SportsCenter.
In the clip, he refuses to call the network ESPN. Even after being corrected, he still refers to the sports network as “Es-pin”. During his 2-3 minute audition, he is so bored by the content being fed to him on the teleprompter that he begins to make things up.
When he’s told that what he’s reporting is not the story on the teleprompter he proceeds to rant about how awful the content is and how he is being made to look like a fool.
When he is told that the overall concept of the network is 24/7 sports, he laughs and tells them how the concept is ridiculous and will never work.
It will be very interesting, and pretty darn entertaining, to see what happens when Burgundy returns to the set after all these years and sees the level to which SportsCenter has risen. Do you think he will admit that he was wrong all those years ago? Probably not, but one can dream, right?
While we anxiously await December 5th, here is the clip from Anchorman: The Legend Continues that shows Burgundy’s ESPN audition.
