No. 10 Wisconsin takes on West Virginia in the finals of the Cancun Challenge at 9:30 pm ET on the CBS Sports Network. The Wisconsin Badgers are off to a hot start at 7-0 while the West Virginia Mountaineers are playing well at 5-1.
Much of the college basketball world will be focused on opening round play at the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden. No. 4 Arizona plays Drexel at 7 pm ET on ESPNU, and No. 6 Duke plays Alabama at 9:30 pm ET on ESPN 2. The championship round will take place on Friday, and an Arizona v. Duke showdown is highly anticipated. However, the Wisconsin v. West Virginia matchup is equally important because of the conferences represented by the two schools.
Wisconsin and West Virginia hail from the Big 10 and Big 12, respectively. Both conferences are arguably the strongest in college basketball, with five ranked teams in the Big 10 and four ranked teams in the Big 12. If you are looking for hints as to which conference is better, then tonight is a good game to follow.
Game preview: West Virginia has two excellent guards. Juwan Staten is averaging 18.2 points, 7.8 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game, and Eron Harris is averaging 20.2 points, 2.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game. However, Wisconsin 7-footer Frank Kaminsky will create trouble for the guards when they decide to drive. Kaminsky averages two blocks per game along with 16.6 points and 5.4 rebounds. Wisconsin also has two guards averaging double digit scoring in Traevon Jackson and Ben Brust.
Kaminsky gives Wisconsin the edge, but a good night from the West Virginia guards will make it a close game.
