Detroit Tigers MVP Miguel Cabrera wants to play first base

The Detroit Tigers shocked the baseball world when they traded Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers last week. That left the team with a hefty hole at first base, a hole that MVP Miguel Cabrera would like to fill as he recently told Venezuelan newspaper El Universal he wants to shift positions.

“I’ve told the #Tigers I want to play 1B”: AL two-time MVP @MiguelCabrera to Venezuelan daily newspaper El Universal (@EUDeporte)

Cabrera of course is a former outfielder who moved to third base.

While not the most nibble of defenders, Cabrera does have a solid glove – it’s just getting a glove on the ball that has become a problem (in addition to playing bunting scenarios due to his lack of speed). It’s a move the Tigers may possibly look into given those factors, though finding a third baseman is far more difficult than a first baseman. Add in that first base is usually an offensive position, the team could replace such production at first easier than they’d be able to do at third.
