Philaelphia 76ers to officially retire Allen Iverson’s number

No player will ever wear the #3 as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers again as the team announced earlier today they will retire Allen Iverson‘s famed number later this season:

The Philadelphia 76ers today announced that they will officially retire Allen Iverson’s number “3” in a special halftime ceremony on Saturday, March 1, 2014 when the Sixers host the Washington Wizards.

Iverson decided to finally hang it up earlier this year, despite the fact he hadn’t actually played in an NBA game since the 09-10 season.

The six foot guard has certainly had his problems off the court, but on it he was an enigma – a player that so many from the current generation grew up watching and emulating. Most younger players in the league didn’t get the opportunity to watch Jordan, Magic or Bird. Many, like LeBron James, cite Iverson as the player they grew up molding their games after.

A.I. will become the eighth Sixers player to have his jersey elevated to the rafters.
