No. 21 Memphis beats Siena 87-60


The Memphis Tigers beat the Siena Saints 87-60 in opening round play of the Old Spice Classic.  The Tigers improved to 3-1, and the Saints fell to 2-5.

Memphis was tenacious on defense, limiting the Saints to shooting 33.8% from the field.  In addition, the Tigers had 12 steals and 11 blocks.  Siena outrebounded Memphis 47-41, but had 20 turnovers in a game they would like to forget.

Memphis had four players scoring in double digits.  Senior guard Joe Jackson led all scorers with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field.  Sophomore Forward Shaq Goodwin scored 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting, and tacked on 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.  Senior guard Michael Dixon Jr. had 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting, and freshman forward Austin Nichols scored 12 points including a perfect 4 of 4 from the line.

Siena was led by sophomore forward Brett Bisping with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Junior Guard Evan Hymes had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.  The Saints will look to improve their shooting performance in the consolation bracket of the Old Spice Classic.

Memphis will play the winner of the LSU-St. Joseph’s game in the semi finals at 5:30 pm ET tomorrow on ESPN 2.  Siena will play the loser at 8 pm ET on ESPNU.
