It was only a matter of time before John Tortorella went on one of his classic bench tirades. It took him a few months to finally erupt on the bench for the Vancouver Canucks, but after the Ottawa Senators went up 1-0 in the middle of the first period yesterday, he gave Jannik Hansen an ear full along with a few pokes.
First, a look at the goal in question.
Hansen is the player that seems to gear shift downwards as the play continues to move up ice. He’s just about standing upright by the time Clarke MacArthur scores for Ottawa, which is a hockey player’s way of saying “I couldn’t care any less.”
That fact wasn’t lost on Tortorella, who laid into Hansen on the bench.
Sometimes when the typically fiery bench goes nuts, the reason can be hard to spot. It isn’t tough to figure out why Tortorella went berserk in this instance though. The Canucks have been struggling to produce as of late, and Torts clearly doesn’t want the team slacking as a result.
Hansen wouldn’t play for the rest of the period and would finish with a season-low 8:08 of ice time following the lazy back-checking effort. Or lack thereof.
