Pavel Datsyuk injury update: Detroit Red Wings forward won’t play Friday

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Red Wings had hoped to get Pavel Datsyuk back from injury sometime this weekend, but he isn’t ready to play on tonight. He’s been experiencing concussion symptoms since catching an elbow to the jaw from Jared Cowen of the Ottawa Senators last Saturday. This will be the third straight game that Detroit’s leading goal scorer has missed.

Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News is reporting that Datsyuk has resumed light skating, but “nothing close to actual practice conditions.” Kulfan spoke to Datsyuk about how he was feeling yesterday:

Slowly, a little bit better. (But) I’m not feeling where I am supposed to be. I’m starting slowly. Just a little bit, but not with the team.

Despite missing one of their top players, Detroit has been on a roll recently. They have won three of their last four, and were impressive in a 6-1 thrashing of the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. That was Detroit’s second consecutive win, and they are looking for three in a row for the first time this month.

November has been a struggle for the Red Wings overall, but with a win against the New York Islanders they’ll have a chance to wrap up the second month of the season on a more positive note.
