Every year the Ballon d’Or is awarded to soccer’s best player. Cristiano Ronaldo is the heavy favorite to win this year, especially after FIFA extended voting after Portugal and Ronaldo’s dominant performance over Sweden.
That Swedish team was headlined by Paris Saint-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic. While some have questioned the voting extension as foul play, Ibrahimovic doesn’t care who wins because he knows he is the best.
“I know I am the best… I don’t need the Ballon d’Or to know I’m the best,” said Ibrahimovic, via the Telegraph. “It matters more to some players.
Ronaldo also down played the award saying he was more focused on playing then winning awards.
“Every year I have shown what I am,” Ronaldo told Portuguese TV. “I have scored 40 or 50 goals a season and that is not within the reach of everyone. I am not blinded by this [prize].”
“I did my work as I have been doing all this time,” Ronaldo said. “I do not have to respond to anyone. My answers I make on the pitch. I try always to give my best.”
Of course this is all coming from a man who said the World Cup wouldn’t be worth watching since he wasn’t playing in it.
“It was probably the last attempt to reach the World Cup with the national team for me. One thing is for sure, a World Cup without me is nothing to watch so it is not worth while to wait for the World Cup,” Ibrahimovic said, via ESPN FC.
