Many were hoping that former Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren would get the opportunity to show off his skills inside of the octagon against the top fighters in the world, but UFC president Dana White isn’t prepared to offer Askren a job just yet.
In fact, White doesn’t believe Askren is as good as his ranking currently indicates, so he thinks that Askren going to a different promotion like World Series of Fighting would be the best move so that he is able to showcase his skills.
“I wasn’t even going to say this, because it sounds like I’m just s—-ing on them, but there’s just no competition for him over at Bellator,” White told MMAjunkie. “There’s competition for him at World Series of Fighting. This kid will probably sign with them. I don’t know they’ve got to come to an agreement and a deal. But if he does, there’s actual competition for him there.”
“I think it’s crazy that he’s ranked in the top 10. He hasn’t fought anybody and has no challenges. The best thing that could’ve ever happened to that kid was leaving Bellator. Now he has the opportunity to go to World Series of Fighting and show what he’s got.”
There is plenty of talent at 170-pounds in WSOF with the likes of champion Steve Carl, Josh Burkman, Jon Fitch and Rousimar Palhares, so it could be the exact opportunity Askren needs.
If he can continue to show dominance against the fighters on WSOF’s roster, which is deeper than he faced in Bellator, he could find himself getting a call from the UFC and finally reaching the level of the sport that he has hoped to reach since becoming a pro.
