There are a few legitimate candidates this season for collegiate coach of the year, but it has to be difficult to ignore Duke Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe and what he’s done with this football program.

Today, they made the improbable happen when they defeated the rival North Carolina Tar Heels, 27-25, and clinched a berth in next week’s ACC Championship Game against the Florida State Seminoles.

Quarterback Anthony Boone, who has been tremendous all year, was stellar once again in leading the charge, going 23-of-34 with 274  yards and two touchdown passes. On the day, he spread the ball around to nine different receivers, showing once again that he’s one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the conference.

On the ground, the two-headed monster of Shaquille Powell and Josh Snead did their job once again. Poweel amassed 57 yards on nine carries, while Snead added in 48 on 10.

After starting the year miserably, North Carolina finishes their regular season at 6-6.

But again, now Duke will have one more test in front of them, and it’s a tough one as they’ll meet the second-ranked ‘Noles in Charlotte next week.
