Everyone expected this to maybe be the greatest Iron Bowl in the game’s illustrious history, and it indeed turned out to be that, and then a whole lot more.
With one second on the clock, Alabama trotted out a freshman kicker for an improbable 50+ yard field goal, something the Tide could not get right all game. Of course, he did miss it, but then chaos ensued.
Auburn’s Chris Davis fielded the missed kick from the back of the end zone and returned it all the way to the other end of the field to give the Tiger’s their second straight miracle victory inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.
It was a battle from start to finish between these two SEC powers for complete control of the SEC West, which now belongs to the Auburn Tigers who will head off to Atlanta next week to play in the SEC Championship Game against either Missouri or South Carolina.
Davis’ 100-yard game-winning return gave the Tigers their 11th win on the season, completing a monumental turnaround by this team who finished just 3-9 last season.
With the loss, Alabama will not get a chance to play for their third consecutive national title, but will still more than likely head off to a BCS bowl.
Now, the question will be how close this win can get Auburn to Ohio State, who will now take over the number two slot, while the Florida State Seminoles will be the number-one team in the country.
